And yet, out of all the millions of readers who sign on to eBay around the world, only one person had been interested enough to place a bid on any of them. As of last Tuesday, more than 50 copies of his books were available from eBay, at prices ranging from less than a dollar to around $35 (too much) for a first edition. Nor is Galsworthy any more popular on the Internet. Most secondhand book dealers, deluged by stacks of purple-and-green-jacketed Galsworthy from attics everywhere, are hesitant to give him valuable store space, unloading his novels instead to library sales, thrift shops and those restaurants and hotel lobbies where it's believed that a row of books - any books - will lend the establishment a touch of class. And so he is either condescended to or - worse - ignored. Galsworthy produced a great deal of writing - not only the nine novels that make up "The Forsyte Saga," far and away his most celebrated work, but more than 25 plays, dozens of short stories, and collections of essays on everything from the horrors of vivisection to the literary legacy of James Russell Lowell.īut Galsworthy's sheer prolificacy may have worked against him: Like the composer Antonio Vivaldi, he simply wrote too much for posterity to sort out. Soames is now wed to the unfaithful French Annette, and Irene is happily married to Jolyon.The books of John Galsworthy (1867-1933), once so popular and plentiful, are all but unread today. Actually, the most compelling part of the story for me remains the unfolding lives of the older generation, Soames and Irene. Essentially the conniving Fleur uses poor Michael for her own selfish purposes. Michael Mont, who also vies for Fleur's affections. In addition to Fleur and Jon, there is a likable third party to the love triangle. Naturally their ill advised love affair opens up all the old wounds between Soames and Irene. From their first encounter at an art gallery, the lovely & spoiled Fleur has made up her mind to have Jon for herself.
Jon is much more appealing, a young man with a deep love and respect for his parents. The story is interesting, though I personally find Fleur not a sympathetic heroine at all but instead totally self absorbed, deceptive, and manipulative. Like its predecessor, this saga has beautiful English scenery, finely furnished country manors, and lovely period costumes. Once again scandal, secrets, and deception dominate the tale.
Fleur is the daughter of Soames Forsyte, and Jon the son of Soames's former wife, Irene. It continues on with the dramatic lives of the younger generation of Forsytes, namely the forbidden romance between Fleur and Jon. This is the sequel to the previous year's mini series, The Forsyte Saga, based on John Galsworthy's novel.
